Much more mesh!

By mesh news

Well, the mesh meetup is over, and it was a great party — lots of good food (thanks to our hosts at the Irish Embassy) and good conversation with the 100 or so people who came. It’s a good thing the Embassy had a little more space they could give us, because we were almost crowding the Bay Street types out at one point!

Thanks to everyone who showed up, and that includes the usual suspects — like Peter Dawson of ThoughtFlickr, Leila Boujnane of Idee Inc., Jim Courtney of Skype Journal, Michael O’Connor Clarke and Joe Thornley of Thornley Fallis, poli-blogger Andrew Coyne, the irrepressible Sacha Chua and too many others to name — and the new arrivals, including blogging star Tony Hung (sorry, that’s Dr. Tony Hung) of Deep Jive Interests, Scott Brooks of ConceptShare (who not only came early but brought his laptop), Maggie Fox of Social Media Group, Martin Cleaver from Helix Commerce and Darren Rowse of ProBlogger and b5media. Sheila Remtulla also came, and was glad that there were some other people who weren’t twenty-somethings 🙂

I know I’m missing a lot of people (only about 90 or so), so thanks again to everyone who came — and especially to Leesa Barnes, podcaster extraordinaire, who brought her gear and did some short interviews with people during the event, which we hope to have available soon. And anyone who was taking pictures (yes, I’m talking to you Leila and Sacha) if you could upload them to Flickr with the tag mesh07, that would be great.

Mark Evans has a post up on his blog about the meetup, as does Rob Hyndman. And Stuart MacDonald, the cheeky bugger, posted one during the event from his BlackBerry, just to show off 🙂

mesh 2007 is a go for liftoff!

By mesh news

Lately, we’ve had lots of people asking us — that is, Stuart and Rob and Mark and Mike and Mathew — whether we’re going to do another mesh conference in Toronto, like we did last May, and the answer is… hell, yes! We had such a great time that we’ve been wanting to do another one ever since we got finished cleaning up from the last one. Now we’ve got the venue and dates locked down, so we wanted to let everyone know that mesh 2007 is definitely a go.

We’re doing it at the MaRS Discovery Centre again, on University Ave near Queen’s Park, and the dates are Tuesday, May 30 and Wednesday, May 31 (we’ll let you know as soon as the ticket window is open so you can book your tickets). We’re hoping to pull together just as fantastic a group of speakers for keynote conversations and panel discussions, as well as blogging, podcasting and other workshops, and we’ll also be having the same kind of social in the atrium and after-party bash that were so well received last time.

Speaking of social events, we thought some of you might not be able to wait until next spring to talk about all the things that are happening on the Web involving social media, so we decided to have a kind of Toronto Web 2.0 mesh meetup in November. Nothing too fancy — just a come-one and come-all invite to the Irish Embassy pub on November 15, after around 6 p.m. or so, for some drinks and great conversation. Startup founders, bloggers, widget-developers, even journalists — all are welcome.

Of course, mesh 2006 involved a whole lot of great conversation too, and if you either couldn’t make it to the conference or wanted to relive some of those keynotes, we’ve uploaded audio files of each of our main conversations to this site: Silicon Valley-based venture capitalist Dr. Paul Kedrosky being interviewed by Mathew, public relations guru Steve Rubel from Edelman being interviewed by Stuart, former Business 2.0 writer Om Malik being interviewed by Mark, Canadian law professor Dr. Michael Geist being interviewed by Rob, and online marketing phenom Tara Hunt doing a great interactive presentation.

We hope you enjoy listening to them as much as we enjoyed doing them. Feel free to share them with anyone who might be interested, provided you don’t charge anything for them, and and that you give credit to mesh. And get ready for some equally great keynotes and panels at mesh 2007!

A walk down memory lane for mesh 2006

By mesh news

In case you just can’t get enough of the original mesh — even after listening to all the podcasts and looking through your bulging scrapbook of mesh collectibles — or if you’re trying to get an idea of what it was like, we’ve collected some comments and photo galleries from people who were at the inaugural bash:

  • Publishing 2.0 blogger (and mesh panelist) Scott Karp called it a “smashing success” and did some heroic live-blogging of the event
  • VC blogger and mesh keynote Paul Kedrosky said “kudos to Mark, Matthew, Mike, Rob, and Stuart for a job incredibly well done. Great speakers, wonderfully well organized, and a fresh-feeling format… Guys, you should be very proud.”
  • Jordan Christensen said “Big props out to the organizers. Nice job guys. Do it again. I’ll be there.”
  • PR blogger and author Debbie Weil said “This was one of the best organized conferences I’ve been to, well… in memory,” and added that “If you think the Web 2.0 thinkers, strategists and implementers are all in the U.S., think again.”
  • Mark Kuznicki said “if you were there, you know it was great. If you weren’t there, you missed out on a lot.”
  • co-organizer Stuart appeared on the legendary Inside the Net podcast with Leo Laporte and Amber MacArthur
  • Gagglescape.ca had some great posts on the different sessions.
  • Tamera Kramer said the mesh conference was “by far the best I’ve been to in a long time. The relaxed format and discussions with the audience were perfect.”
  • The Interactive Media Lab live-blogged the session with Om Malik.
  • Albert Lai, CEO of Bubbleshare and mesh panelist, put up a Bubbleshare album of his photos, complete with humorous speech bubbles.
  • CanBlog said that he finds many conferences to be boring “wankfests” but that “I came away from the show energized, inspired and relieved that not everyone thinks I’m insane for my fascination with all of this stuff.”
  • Michael Glenn said “Thanks to Stuart, Rob, Michael, Mark and Matthew for putting on a great event. The presentations served as a great jumping off point for ideas and discussions in the halls, the un-lunch rooms, the bars and the back channel.
  • Sulemaan Ahmed from OneDegree said “it was a great opportunity to network with others” and “the sessions on day one were very productive.”
  • For a “you were there” kind of feel, check out the photos in the Flickr mesh06 pool.
