About Tonya Fleming
Tonya Fleming leads the Private Markets & Innovation team within the Corporate Finance Department at the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC). Tonya’s team reviews the filings of private companies who raise capital and works within the Alberta innovation ecosystem to engage with and provide securities law education to growing businesses navigating securities laws as they raise capital. She has represented the ASC on a number of multi-jurisdictional committees with the Canadian Securities Administrators as policy on novel securities law issues is being developed.
Prior to joining the ASC, Tonya began her career by practising law with a national firm for almost a decade, specializing in in securities law, mergers and acquisitions and corporate governance. She then moved into the energy industry where she served as General Counsel and Vice-President of three fast-growing TSX-listed energy companies. She has extensive experience providing advise to Boards of Directors and senior management on effective governance oversight and regulatory compliance.
She currently serves as a Governor at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), where she is Chair of the Governance Committee and a member of the Audit Committee and the Executive Committee.
Tonya holds a Bachelor of Arts (with Distinction) from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) & Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Dalhousie University. She recently obtained the CFA Investment Foundations Certificate from the CFA Institute. She is a member of the Law Society of Alberta.
