Pulling the Covers Off meshmarketing ’11

By meshmarketing

Coming off a successful meshwest in Edmonton last week, it’s time to pull the covers of meshmarketing ’11, a one-day event that combines a morning of insightful keynotes and presentations and an afternoon of workshops and panels focused on helping you do things better or differently within the fast-moving digital marketing world.

Then, there’s the other valuable part of any mesh event – the opportunity to network with not only people who work in the same field but attendees from other sectors (entrepreneurs, public relations, government, non-profits, academia, corporate communications, digital and advertising agencies) who can offer a new perspective or approach to digital marketing. Networking is one of mesh’s pillars, which is why we build in healthy breaks between sessions.

So let’s talk about our great line-up of speakers. Kicking things off in the morning in Klout.com founder Joe Fernandez, whose company has captured the spotlight as one of the leading ways to measure influence. In a digital world with content being created than ever, tools to identify the key influencers and thought leaders have become increasingly important.

Next up is Greg Hounslow, one of the key strategists for WestJet’s emerging media team. Greg has played a hands-on role in building WestJet’s strong social media presence and a vibrant online community.

Finally, we’ll wrap up the morning with a presentation looking at Facebook vs. Google+ featuring Edelman’s Steve Rubel, who’s a keen Google+ user.

In the afternoon, we’ve got a full slate of panels and presentations that features probably the strong line-up of speakers we’ve had since meshmarketing was started in 2009.

Eight Afternoon Panels & Workshops

The afternoon features sessions on:

– Luxury brands and digital marketing

– Life beyond the search box amid the rise of social media and the real-time Web

– The magic of metrics, featuring KissMetrics’ Hiten Shah

– How to leverage “Big Data”, which looks at how to use all the data being gathered by online companies.

– Life in a post-desktop world in which mobile devices rule the roost.

– How to get intelligence and insight from social media monitoring.

Here’s the meshmarketing schedule, which will be updated soon.

mesh, mesh and more mesh

By meshmarketing, meshwest

It used to be that mesh happened once a year. It was an annual “party” that we threw and then invited all of our friends.

As mesh has grown, we’ve expanded the mesh “footprint” by launching meshU, meshmarketing and, most recently, meshwest, which kicked off in Calgary in June.

In the process, mesh has gone from happening in May to happening thorough the year – with the exception of the summer when we try to get off the grid or, at least, be on the grid less often.

Over the next three months, there are three mesh events happening. The list includes:

1. meshwest (Edmonton) on Oct. 4, which features a keynote by Well.ca founder and CEO Ali Asaria. Well.ca is one of Canada’s biggest e-commerce success stories, and established itself as the leading online health and beauty store.

meshwest also features a great start-up panel featuring Jevon MacDonald (GoInstant), Maura Rodgers (Strutta) and Duleepa “Dups” Wijayawardhana (Empire Avenue). We’ve also got Ashley Casovan from the City of Edmonton talking about its embrace of open data. And then there’s a social media panel that will provide great real-world insight about how to execute operationally on a day-to-day basis.

2. meshmarketing in Toronto on Nov. 15. We’ll be unveiling the updated Web site and speakers soon so stayed tuned.

3. meshwest (Vancouver) on Dec. 5. Janice Diner will be doing a presentation that will deliver great insight into how to create a successful Facebook Page, along with lots of case studies of companies doing things right. Hiten Shah from KissMetrics will talk about digging into data to pull out intelligence needed to make smarter business decisions.

Needless to say, it will be a busy fall for the mesh gang but we’re looking forward to a great slate of speakers and programming.

Tickets for meshwest (Edmonton and Vancouver) can be purchased here. Tickets for meshmarketing will go on sale soon.

Lessons from Building a Brand via Social Media

By meshmarketing

One of the biggest benefits of social media is the opportunity to build or enhance a brand to consumers in a new and different way. Of course, this is easier said than done given the rules of engagement are different, along with the expectations of consumers. Even strong brands are challenging to establish a solid social media presence.

The opportunities and challenges were one of the reasons we wanted to bring together a panel featuring companies attempting to leverage social media to build and grow their brands. We wanted to learn about what has worked for these companies, what they have done to capture the attention of consumers, and the techniques and tools that have been effective. As important, we wanted to get their perspective on the lessons learned along the way.

The panel includes:

– Elizabeth Margles, vice-president of marketing with Porter Airlines. Armed with a strong brand and customer loyalty, Porter launched itself into social media earlier this year with a Facebook Page and Twitter. The company was looking to achieve three objectives: drive sales and promotion, customer service and handle crisis situations.
– Ramon De Leon (aka @Ramon_DeLeon), who owns several Domino’s Pizza stores in Chicago. De Leon’s creative and active use of social media has made him one of the leading voices within the social media marketing landscape. This include a popular video in which De Leon publicly reached out to a customer who had an unhappy experience.
– Graeme Menzies (aka @graememenzies), ex-Social Media Director, Vancouver Olympic Committee and President, MenziesOnline Communications. During the Vancouver Olympics, social media was effectively used to provide insight into the competition, as well as provide insight behind the scenes.
